Senatobia and Tate County have a new resource for safety following the recent certification of one of Senatobia’s firefighters.
Chantay Rhone, Fire and Life Safety Educator with Senatobia Fire and Rescue recently completed the National Child Passenger Safety Certification training.
The three-day training teaches how to properly install car seats and to promote safe practices with children in and around vehicles.
SFD Chief Ethan Foresman said Rhone’s certification will be an asset to the Five Star City.
“This is an excellent resource for the community. Chantay is doing excellent work as Fire and Life Safety educator! There will be even more opportunities and programs as our staffing improves in the coming years,” said Foresman.
According to the website www.safekids.org , CPS technicians and instructors put their knowledge to work by conducting child safety seat checks, where parents and caregivers receive hands-on assistance for proper use of child restraint systems and safety belts. These dedicated technicians offer education, support and guidance in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.
Currently, road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in the U.S.; however, correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.
According to studies, more than half of car seats are not used or installed correctly.
Rhone is the only certified technician in Tate County.
