It is Sunshine Week! This could arguably be one of the most important weeks for freedom loving Americans.
Why is it important?
Well, ultimately, we could not function as a republic if we didn’t demand that our government be completely transparent with us.
I feel like this year with its municipal elections it is a perfect time to remind candidates that once they accept that oath of office, they accept the responsibility of serving the greater good and are bound by the Mississippi Public Records Act of 1972 (and subsequent updates in more recent years).
It is actually during this week each year a fellow publisher prints out a copy of public record laws and delivers the printouts to his local Board of Aldermen and Board of Supervisors. I used to laugh about him doing that. It seemed a bit of an “overkill” to me.
Now, however, I’m not so sure.
Recently, there have been some issues in Tate County regarding transparency. Now I think I understand why he does that each year.
By the way folks, were you aware that you are entitled to text messages and emails and phone records of elected officials? Even if the messages are sent on a personal device. Simply send a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in regards to the topic and the politician will be forced to turn over the information or face legal charges. I know those already hold office here in Tate County are aware of these laws and have already accepted the responsibility. I hope all of our candidates are aware and ready to face public scrutiny.
Honestly, I think simply due to that fact, I would never want to be in a public office. That is a type of scrutiny I would not relish. Not that I’m trying to hide anything, but I wouldn’t want people to have access to my personal life.
I admire those who are running and wish to serve the great good. I don’t think everyone is cut out for public service...but that is the beauty of it I guess, we all get to vote for who we think would do the best job.
One thing I always consider before heading to the ballot box is to ask the question, “Will this person uphold transparently? Will they uphold our public record laws and make a commitment to fully serving the greater good? Will they let the light in?”
