This past Sunday while at church I was reminded of all the lessons which can be learned from humility. Sometimes humility can be a hard thing to remember.
But isn’t that what makes it such a desirable quality? At one point or another, we’ve all met a person who was genuinely humble, and didn’t that make them all the more pleasant of a person?
The fact that humility isn’t always easily obtainable should click in our heads that it is worth obtaining.
What’s the old saying? “Anything worth having is worth fighting for.”
We are surrounded by a world which encourages people to have pride and praises vanity. Even the concept of social media, which began with intentions of helping people stay connected from around the globe, has morphed into something encouraging the worst of human nature.
I am especially reminded of the special quality of humility as we approach the coming election season. So many politicians throw humility out the window and want to boast of their accomplishments, accolades, and honors. And don’t get me wrong, I think there are times where a person certainly must be confident within themselves and their abilities, but I also think there are times to remain humble. It’s a fine line to toe. Challenging even.
I’m sure there will be candidates who seem perfect. And they may well be perfectly suited for a certain position, but I also learned a long time ago that if someone seems too perfect to be true…well, they probably aren’t perfect at all.
I would encourage everyone to start by practicing humility. There is a strength which comes from admitting shortcomings, and seeking help from others who might do the job better. There seems to be a peace which settles around the person once they set themselves on the path.
My dearest hope for our country, state, county, cities and towns, is that we elect the best person to a position of leadership. I hope to see our leaders humble and fight the thread of pridefulness we see so rampant in our world.
I was certainly glad of the reminder to stay humble this weekend, so on that note, stay humble my friends.
