The amount of delinquent property taxes on local mobile homes has dropped since Tate County entered an agreement with a collection agency almost a year ago
Tax Assessor/Collector Joyce Collins said the total amount of overdue taxes and interest on manufactured homes has decreased from $98,000 in 2021 to approximately $80,000 this year. That’s a far cry from the $298,000 in delinquent mobile home taxes owed to the county in 2018. That amount was nearly $500,000 in 2008.
Tate County joined forces with Indiana-based American Financial Credit Services (AFCS) in 2021 to assist with overdue personal property taxes on businesses and mobile homes. AFCS, a fully licensed and bonded collection agency, provides government bad debt receivable management services in four states including Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
A common misconception is when a mobile home sits on someone else’s property and the owner of that mobile home considers the property owner responsible for paying taxes on it.
Mobile homes are similar to vehicles and are titled in the owner’s name, and like every other residence in the county, taxes must be paid on it annually. If a mobile home is registered in your name, you are ultimately responsible for paying taxes on it.
