A bystander ended up in handcuffs after threatening an officer with the Senatobia Police Department.
At around 4:40 on Tuesday, Oct. 19, officers with the department responded to an armed disturbance on Hudson Street in Senatobia. According to reports, the incident involved several juveniles including a 12-year old who was allegedly robbed at gunpoint.
As the officers arrived on scene the armed juvenile fled from police while his hands were holding his waistband. The 15-year old was captured and obtained in the parking lot of Days Inn. Upon capture, a bag of narcotics was also recovered.
Senatobia officers located a 17-year old juvenile involved in the incident on Scottsdale Street and an 18-year old suspect on Cox Street.
Detectives with the department are investigating the incident further.
While officers were on scene a crowd of bystanders formed, and one man identified as Michael Hollins, 25 of Sardis, approached a law enforcement officer making threats. The officer attempted to restrain the man and place him in custody. Hollins resisted and a taser was used. According to a social media post he was the brother of one of the juveniles detained.
In a release from the department, it states additional bystanders became hostile, but no further arrests were made.
A statement from the department said the following:
“In situations like these, it is always disheartening when a small portion of people attempt to disrupt officers’ efforts to restore peaceful conditions. This type of behavior is unfair to the law-abiding residents who do not wish to have drug activity or violence near their homes. In our mission to serve the community, we are thankful for the continued support of those who support public safety.”
Senatobia Police Chief Richard Chandler said he was proud of how his officers handled the situation.
“I was proud the officers kept their cool and were professional,” Chandler said.
Chandler said the department handled the incident fairly.
“It’s always disheartening when we have to deal with juveniles committing crimes,” he said. “However, when a crime is committed by anyone, we’ll treat everyone fairly and equally to ensure justice is served according to the law.”
In a statement on the incident, SPD said officers were advised that similar incidents have occurred in the past with other victims. The department urges citizens who have additional information to report it to the police. Further details are not being released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
