This past Saturday I had the opportunity to participate in the annual Rotary Cleanup Day for the City of Senatobia.
I’ve participated in the event in prior years, but this year’s turnout was a huge success. It is so inspiring to see kids and teenagers willing to roll up their sleeves and take pride in their community.
We had business leaders, bankers, insurance agents, school officials, nurses, doctors, IT specialists, teachers, hair stylists, pasters, college presidents and coaches all willing to roll up their sleeve to make cleaning up the city a success. These were the people setting the example.
There were police officers on the roads helping keep watch to make sure people slowed down on the roadways. There were Tate County Sheriff’s Deputies. There were Senatobia trash trucks running routes to collect filled garbage bags.
The city was cleaned up. Over 360 participants signed up to pick up trash. They managed to cover 23 miles of the town.
And in a timely manner. All the groups were finished by 10 a.m.
Also, the event happened right before the city’s biggest event of the year. Senatobia’s Five Star City Fest is coming up quickly. Each year Jamie Sowell works hard to bring thousands of people to our little neck of the woods. I’m glad we get to showcase a cleaned up city.
I know one thing everyone who participated in the event took away from it...littering is bad. I don’t think any of the 360 participants will be tossing anything out of a vehicle window anytime soon.
While the event is only one day a year, help make a difference by keeping the city clean. Throw trash in a garbage receptacle. And be ready to lend a hand next year.
There’s always more room for more hands on deck to serve our community.
