The weekend before Fall Break was an exciting one for fans of Independence and Senatobia.
For Independence, the game came down to the last 40 seconds in a 30-28 win against Rosa Fort. Senatobia’s matchup wasn’t nearly as close, as the Warriors took down South Pontotoc on the road, 52-3.
The battle between the Wildcats and Lions was a back-and-forth affair the entire way, but the best play came in the final 40 seconds. With Rosa Fort tasting victory, Independence was forced to make a big play and quarterback Brady Adams delivered. Adams hurled a Hail Mary pass to receiver C.J. Lane to put the Wildcats on top for good, giving IHS a crucial region win.
Independence improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in Region 2-3A, while Rosa Fort fell to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in region play. The Wildcats will take on North Panola in Sardis this Friday at 7 P.M., as IHS looks to potentially clinch the region title for a second straight season.
Meanwhile, South Pontotoc took the benefit of a Senatobia fumble to kick a 33-yard field goal early in last Thursday’s matchup. However, those would be the only points that the Warriors allowed, as Julien Tabor scored four first half touchdowns to put SHS up 38-3 at the half.
Jonathan Faulkner also returned an interception for a defensive touchdown in the first half, while Jay Bonner added a score of his own. Deavion Watson also added a touchdown, while Javion Irby capped off the scoring with a long scoring run of his own.
With the victory, the Warriors improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 2-4A, as South Pontotoc fell to 2-5 and 0-2 in region play. Senatobia will travel to Byhalia this Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
