We should lead by example, but not by an example dripping with hypocrisy. In addition to bringing up your children in the way they should go, the Word of God says: “Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care but lead them by your own good example” (1 Peter 5:3). It starts in the home with faith that grows into an eagerness to watch over our own and others. “If we say we are his, we must follow the example of Christ” (1 John 2:6). This essential teaching is akin to what Jesus said about showing them the way. Jesus said: “I have set an example for you so that you will do just what I have done for you” (John 13:15).
Today, too many households are running on fumes and refilling the tank with violence and cruelty as a norm. These types of homes set an example for following Satan, not God. Yes, you can beat someone into submission, but you will lose some love and respect in the process. Yes, you can bribe someone into acquiescing, but you both sin in the process. Faith in the Word of God gives witness to the success of the Lord’s way; so, have faith and be an example for the Father and everyone to see.
Children need leaders, protectors, and breadwinners. “And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching” (Titus 2:7). Set an example in speech and conduct. Walk the talk! Do not corrupt the Word of God by acting deceitfully before your children or adults.
Adults need the same things in different ways and at different levels. Everyone does not reach the same level of knowledge and understanding at the same time. By faith and a pattern of good works, we must encourage people to walk worthy of their calling. Do the things that are beneficial to the people and show yourself to be a sincere and dignified person who is trustworthy and dedicated to doing good deeds. “I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have put their faith in God may devote themselves to good actions” (Titus 3:8). Let’s renew our mission to motivate one another to fix our faith on God and speak as if Christ was speaking through us. “Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus” (Romans 15:5).
