Last week was not kind to the Senatobia baseball program, as the Warriors dropped a pair of losses to South Pontotoc, after suffering a previous 12-2 loss to South Panola on March 22.
In the Region 2-4A contests against South Pontotoc, SHS fell in the opener by a 15-5 final last Tuesday, before falling 16-4 at home last Friday.
South Pontotoc opened the game with a 5-0 lead in the first inning of last Tuesday’s matchup, and the Cougars tacked on two more runs in the third, stretching the lead to 7-0. Though the Warriors finally got on the board with a run in the fourth inning, South Pontotoc scored three in the fifth and five more in the bottom of the sixth inning, sealing the six-inning win.
Senatobia committed six errors in the loss and finished with seven base hits, compared to 12 from the Cougars. Cade Kennedy went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Warriors, while Ayden Ward finished with a double in a 2-for-3 effort.
Evans Sealy pitched 4.2 innings for SHS, collecting a pair of strikeouts but allowed three walks and 10 total runs, though only four were earned. Aiden Brunetti pitched the final inning in relief, allowing five total runs with only one counting as earned.
Though the rematch started off a little closer, South Pontotoc broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third, scoring four runs. The Warriors added two of their own runs in the same inning, but the Cougars tacked on five more in the fourth and seven more in the fifth inning, pulling away for the 16-4 win in five innings.
Once again, errors were a problem for Senatobia, as the Warriors were charged with five. SHS also finished the game with five hits, compared to 10 from South Pontotoc.
Silas King went 2-for-2 at the bottom of the lineup to lead the Warriors’ efforts. Brayden Coleman tossed four innings on the mound, striking out six batters before allowing nine total runs and seven hits, though only six of the runs were earned. King also pitched the final inning for Senatobia, accruing two strikeouts but allowing seven total runs, with only one counting as earned.
Now 9-8 on the season, the Warriors will take on New Albany and Strayhorn this week, weather permitting. The first of two games against the Bulldogs is scheduled for Tuesday, April 1 at SHS, and the two teams will meet at New Albany on Friday.
Meanwhile, Senatobia’s game at Strayhorn is slated for a 2 P.M. start time on Saturday.
