How can anyone who claims to be a Christian support that disgusting horrible filthy man, Donald Trump?
I'm regularly asked why so many Evangelical Christians support Donald Trump despite his obviously flawed personality. Trust me, Evangelicals are just as aware of this womanizing lying braggart's personality defects as his opponents are. Here's my take on this question.
First, Evangelicals have been told since the days of Bill Clinton's cigar that morality is irrelevant to qualification for public office. Bill’s escapades with Monica and others were excused out of hand by the media and Democrat intelligentsia who pounded their secular pulpits with the message that what happens under the presidential desk doesn’t matter. Evangelicals heard that message loud and clear.
Second, and more importantly, Evangelicals have read the Bible.
I don't mean they've read the Christmas story or heard cute versions of the stories about Jonah and the Whale or David and Goliath. I mean they've read the whole bloomin' thing cover to cover since they were able to read. They know it a lot better than you do.
Not only have they read the Bible, they study it and they know it. ALL of it. Many read it cover to cover at least once a year. They read it every day. They have whole study guides that they work on every day. Sit down in a roomful of Evangelicals and you’ll probably hear a discussion of what Bible study they’re working on and which ones they like and don’t like. They know from their study of the Bible that Donald Trump is a sleazy so-and-so and probably always will be. Ut here’s what else they know.
They know that Noah was a drunkard who passed out naked in front of his family. (Genesis 9:20) They know that Noah was chosen by God to save humanity from the great flood.
They know Abraham not only fathered a child with his female servant, Hagar, he ran her off and refused to take care of her baby. (Genesis 16) They also know Abraham was the father of God’s chosen people.
They know King David ordered a good soldier to the hottest part of the battle to be killed after David had gotten that man's wife pregnant. (Second Samuel 11) David authored the Book of Psalms.
They know that the prophet Elisha called the bears that killed 42 children for mocking his baldness. (Second Kings 2:23-25) They know God called Elisha to instigate the war that cast out Ahab and Jezebel and restore Jehu as the rightful King of Israel. They know Simon Peter chopped off a man's ear with a sword and denied that he knew Jesus, yet he remained "The Rock upon which I shall build My Church". (John 18)
They know that Saul of Tarsus held coats for the mob that murdered St. Stephen. (Acts 7:58) Saul later repented, changed his name to Paul, and became the greatest evangelist of all time.
Evangelicals know all these things about not-so-good men who were used by God to advance His plans. They see Donald Trump as one more in a long line of flawed leaders.
So, here’s a word of advice to my Never Trump friends. Don't even think about trying to use Biblical, or even non-Biblical arguments about Trump’s blatant immorality with a Trump supporting Evangelical Christian.
