An inmate at the Tate County jail died after he was transported from the facility to a Memphis hospital, according to authorities.
Sheriff Luke Shepherd confirmed Andrew Sheradon Merryman, 42, of Coldwater, died Saturday, June 28.
He said Merryman’s body was sent to the Mississippi Forensics Laboratory for an autopsy to determine a cause of death.
Shepherd said Merryman was housed alone in an isolation cell where jail officials routinely conduct wellness checks of inmates every 30 minutes or so. Merryman was found conscious and lying on the floor in his cell Wednesday, June 25, before an ambulance took him to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis.
Records show Merryman was arrested by TCSO deputies Tuesday, June 17, and charged with public drunk, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct following a disturbance at Dollar General in Arkabutla.
Shepherd said the incident remains under investigation and could not provide any additional information.
