Lying to police officers has landed one Tate County resident behind bars.
Senatobia Police Department received a call Saturday, Oct. 21 a little after midnight that a local bicyclist was ran off the road on Main Street. When officers arrived on scene near Zaxby’s they found a woman identified as Kristin Casty, 38, of Coldwater.
Casty was transported by ambulance to Senatobia’s Highland Hills Medical Center to receive treatment for her injuries, and then officers were able to take her report. Casty told officers she was riding her bicycle westbound on East Main Street near Zaxby’s when she looked behind her and saw a white Ford F-250 swerve into her lane. Casty said the incident caused her to crash her bicycle. She said that while she was on the ground the vehicle stopped in the middle of the roadway and she heard about three female voices scream out of the truck “Get out of our town”.
Casty said she began crying and was able to pull her bicycle out of the road and on to the grass at Zaxby’s as the truck drove away toward downtown. She then informed police officers that a group of college students stopped to check on her and informed her the white truck tried to run her over. It was at this point she told officers that she called 911 for assistance.
During the conversation with police officers Casty claimed Jamie Sowell, Senatobia Main Street Director, was responsible for trying to run her over. Officers informed Casty they would investigate by obtaining area video surveillance footage to confirm the incident.
On Tuesday, Oct. 24, detectives at SPD were able to gain access to video surveillance footage from a local business which clearly documented the incident.
According to reports, no vehicles were in the vicinity of Casty when she crashed her bicycle, and she was not forced from the roadway. The footage also showed Casty remaining on scene for several minutes before attempting to contact police.
SPD detectives were able to determine Casty had falsely reported an assault.
Casty was charged with false reporting of a crime. She was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 25, and booked into Tate County Jail at 10:23 p.m. before bonding out at 10:56 p.m.
