A Tate County man was one of four fatalities on Mississippi roadways during Memorial Day weekend.
Troopers from the Mississippi Highway Patrol worked 135 vehicle accidents, issued 7,026 citations, made 118 arrests for impaired driving, and cited 864 motorists for seatbelt violations during the four-day enforcement period ending at midnight on Monday, May 27. Alcohol was a factor in seven of the 135 crashes.
A report from MHP states a Ford Focus driven by Jhajuan Milan, 37, of Sarah, was traveling east Sunday, May 26, on Highway 4 in Tunica County when it left the roadway and collided with a culvert. Milan died at the scene.
The other fatal accidents occurred in Benton, Harrison and Itawamba counties.
In Benton County, a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Dwight Holcomb, 48, was traveling east on Highway 4 when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a utility pole Friday, May 24. Holcomb received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also on Friday, May 24, a Toyota Prius driven by Kenneth Cook, 59, was traveling north on Highway 25 in Itawamba County when the vehicle left the roadway and overturned. Cook received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
The most dangerous wreck according to MHP occurred in Harrison County on Sunday, May 26. A Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by Roy Holden, Jr., 39, and a 16-year-old passenger were traveling east on Interstate 10 when the passenger fell from the moving motorcycle. Another Harley-Davidson operated by Amanda Holden, 43, was traveling east on Interstate 10 when she and two other motorcycles took evasive actions to avoid hitting the passenger and crashed. Two people were transported via ambulance from the scene while two others were airlifted to the hospital. Holden was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
