Dear Editor,
The majority of “protestants” choose this time of year to celebrate the birth of Jesus even though the Bible does not give us the date of his birth, nor command us to celebrate it. What is even stranger, is that included in the “birthday” celebration of our Lord is the perpetuated lie of Santa Clause. Proverbs 12:22 says, “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord.” Some would justify this practice as “just pretending.” As a child, I remember carrying a stick around pretending it was a sword. If someone had told me, “Hey kid, that’s just a stick”, my parents would not have cared one bit because pretending is different than belief in something as the truth.
That’s not what we have going on with Santa. Many of you know people who would probably never speak to you again if you told their child Santa isn’t real.
Finally, consider this about Santa. Aren’t children taught that he sees them and knows if they’ve been bad or good? This is something only God is able to accomplish. Proverbs 15:3 says, “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.”
How do his reindeer fly? The most common explanation is “Christmas magic”. The Bible is very clear about how God feels about magic or as it is frequently referred to in scripture as sorcery or witchcraft.
I recommend reading Galatians 5:19-21 and Revelation 22:15. The tradition of leaving milk and cookies sounds strikingly similar to the idol worship described in Jeremiah 7:18 “The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.”
Have we unknowingly allowed ourselves to be entangled in pagan idolatry? Imagine how crafty the devil would be to trick the majority of the “religious” world into practicing idolatry in the midst of thinking they are honoring God. Has this ever happened before? Read Exodus 32:1-5. Let us not be ignorant of the devices of Satan and heed the words of 1 John 5:21, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”
Sincerely,
Blake Hawkins
