Sales tax collections in Senatobia and Coldwater suffered a slump in February, according to data from the Mississippi Department of Revenue (MDOR).
Statistics from MDOR show Senatobia with a 3.9% decrease in sales tax collections from $250,084 in February 2025 to $240,346 in February of the current fiscal year. It marked the city’s third consecutive month with a dip in revenue.
Overall, the city has collected 1.2% more in sales tax in fiscal year 2026 – $26,885 – than it did the first eight months of 2025.
Coldwater gathered $31,159 in February 2026 compared to $32,995 a year ago for a drop of 5.6%. The town’s composite numbers in the first eight months of the current fiscal year are 11.5% above what Coldwater collected in FY 2025 – $321,424 compared to $282,717.
MDOR operates on a fiscal year beginning July 1st and ending June 30th. Statewide sales tax collections are based on a three-month cycle. Checks disbursed in February by MDOR were from revenue obtained in December and taxes paid to the state in January.
Sales tax is collected on local purchases and submitted monthly to MDOR before it is paid to cities. Sales tax receipts paid to cities are a direct result of money spent by consumers in those municipalities.
