The following is the Winter Storm Forecast from the National Weather Service in Memphis for all of Tate County for the next three days and local details by the Tate Record newspaper in Senatobia.
Approximately three inches of sleet fell overnight in Tate County on top of an estimated four inches that was reported by the Tate Record in Senatobia on Saturday.
Roads are treacherous and the community is urged to stay home unless there is an emergency or travel is work related.
Pipes that have not frozen could freeze tonight as temperatures plummet.
State highways are being cleared by the Mississippi Department of Transportation and bridges have been sprinkled with cinders, but remain dangerous in some areas.
Tate County road crews are clearing downed trees.
Tallhatchie Valley Electric Power Association has reported an outage on Blue Goose Road north of Strayhorn, one in Tyro, one in Wyatte and one in Barr in Tate County. Batesville and areas south of Highway 287 appear to have suffered morefrom the ice and power outages.
Entergy has reported approximately 50 outages in Senatobia and Sardis. Como has reported 15 outages.
The precipitation is expected to taper off Sunday afternoon and with unseasonably cold weather Sunday night and Monday morning. Temperatures could fall into the single digits.
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST:
WHAT: Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 10 below expected. Weather will not get above freezing and will plummet about 6 p.m. tonight.
WHERE: Senatobia, Coldwater, Independence, Strayhorn and all of Tate County.
WHEN: From 6 PM Sunday to noon CST Tuesday.
IMPACTS: The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS
- Dress in layers including a hat, face mask and gloves if you must go outside.
- Walk in the grass rather than hard surfaces to lessen the impact in the event of a fall.
- Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure pets and cattle have unfrozen water.
- Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors.
- Ensure portable heaters are used correctly heat sources are at least three feet away from anything combustible.
- Do not use generators or grills inside.
Both Tate County School District and Senatobia Municipal School District will be closed Monday.
Neither Senatobia nor Tate County has a winter storm shelter.
Churches are urged to check up on member today.
