State Treasurer David McRae has returned $125 million in unclaimed money to Mississippians since taking office in 2020. This is the largest amount of unclaimed money returned in a single Treasurer's tenure.
"Our team has remained focused on returning money to the people," said McRae. "By switching to the eClaims system, using the latest claims verification technology, and proactively matching money to owners even before they make a claim, we’ve elevated Mississippi’s unclaimed money program to much higher standards."
Under Treasurer McRae’s direction, the Treasury has updated its unclaimed money system, allowing (among other things) many to claim their cash online. This eliminates the hassle of getting a notary or depending on the the U.S. Postal Service.
"Returning unclaimed money back to Mississippians is about more than just breaking records," said McRae. "It is part of our larger goal to respect the financial needs of Mississippians. Beyond the unclaimed money department, our team has restored MPACT to solvency, earned more than $375 million in interest income, saved the state $100 million in debt refinancing deals, and helped improve Mississippi's credit score."
On February 1, the State Treasury is celebrating National Unclaimed Property Day to raise awareness that there are millions of outstanding dollars still to be claimed at the the Treasury. To join the celebration, Mississippi residents are invited to search for unclaimed money at treasury.ms.gov/search.
