The founder of one of Senatobia’s oldest businesses has been chosen as grand marshal of the city’s 2025 Christmas parade.
James McCrary, previous owner of McCrary's Furniture & Appliances, will be in the lead vehicle Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., when dozens of floats, marching bands and holiday-based displays make their way through the streets of Senatobia transforming the city into a magical holiday wonderland.
This year’s parade theme is “A Storybook Christmas” and Jamie Sowell, Community Development Director for Senatobia Main Street, is anxious to see the spirit of the season represented in each entry.
"The Christmas Parade is more than just an event—it's a tradition that brings our entire community together," said Sowell. "Year after year, we see family’s line Main Street with lawn chairs and hot cocoa, neighbors reconnecting, and the joy on children's faces as the floats go by. This parade represents the best of Senatobia: creativity, community pride, and the spirit of coming together to celebrate what makes our hometown special."
McCrary, who celebrated his 99th birthday Oct. 25, and partner Elzy Dowdle formed McCrary and Dowdle in 1952. The company originally started as a plumbing, electrical, and heating/air business with appliances sold off the floor at the store location which later offered electronics and furniture.
In 1998 after 46 years in business together, McCrary and Dowdle decided to make an amicable split. The McCrary family took over the furniture and appliance side of the business, while the Dowdle’s’ claimed the heating and air side. McCrary's Furniture & Appliances incorporated in 1998.
After serving customers from across north Mississippi for over seven decades, the business closed its doors for good last summer – ending a run of 73 years.
McCrary is a founding member of the Senatobia Civitan Club and was previously named Citizen of the Year by the organization. He also once served as board president at Back Acres Country Club.
“I truly appreciate being thought of and recognized,” McCrary said. “Without the continued support of the community over the years, I would not have enjoyed such great success.”
