Dear Editor,
Once again Billboard.com listed the witch as America’s most popular Halloween costume.
Undoubtedly, many self professed Christians will be included in the number who dress their children in these costumes, many without giving it a second thought. This custom is accepted without question in our society, but God’s people must appeal to a higher standard (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
The important question then becomes, “Is this pleasing to God?” Would God approve of us dressing our children, who are gifts from him (Psalm 127:3), in attire representing an immoral practice he considers an abomination (Deuteronomy 18:10-12)?
The punishment for this sin under the law of Moses was death (Exodus 22:18). Occult practices such as these were also condemned in Leviticus 20 along with other detestable acts such as incest, beastiality, and homosexuality. Would we feel equally comfortable dressing our offspring to represent these other abominations, even if it was “just for fun”? The truth is that the Bible clearly labels witchcraft as a sin (2 Chronicles 33:6) and we should not allow the influence of the world (Exodus 23:2) to cause us to mimic that immoral activity, even if only in appearance (1 Thessalonians 5:22).
Let us instead honor God by being his holy nation (1 Peter 2:9), not following the way of the world (Psalm 106:39), but rather seeking to live after the example Jesus left us (1 Peter 2:21). Our Lord loved righteousness and hated iniquity (Hebrews 1:9), including witchcraft (Galatians 5:19-21).
