It is a saying you will hear your Tate Record will say many times: “Everybody is for progress, but nobody wants to change.”
We think that is true of the new roundabout in Senatobia that opened this week.
The “Angles” that were once found on Highway 51 in the middle of Senatobia are no more. They have been replaced by a roundabout that the English figured out back in the horse-and-buggy days.
But the concept is new to the hills of northwest Mississippi. As we all know Oxford has had them for years.
Maneuvering through a roundabout requires confidence and knowledge of knowing where you want to go.
When if first opened last week, it was amusing to watch Senatobians creep up to the roundabout, stop at every curve and ponder what they were going to do next. We looked like the proverbial calf staring at a new gate!
Your Tate Record firmly believes this community will master this new-and-improved route in a few weeks. We will look back in years to come and talk about the “Angles” that once snarled traffic when school let out or a truck pulling an oversized load rolled through town.
Your Tate Record even has a poll on this website where you can voice your opinion on the roundabout. Most have said they like it.
We want to broaden this editorial and urge Senatobia and Tate County to learn what change can do. Not all change is good, but as Senatobia and Tate County grow in the next five, ten, twenty years, we will see a lot of changes.
Computer companies are eyeing Mississippi for a place to expand. Families are seeking to escape Memphis and are looking for good schools and good neighborhoods. Businesses and services will follow that growth and bring more change.
Change is coming and our leaders need to prepare and plan for it. We will suffer if they don’t. Let’s wisely plan for progress. Let’s embrace change that makes us better.
