Improvements to Country Club Road to make it safer for travel are expected to be completed in May.
Kevin McLeod from Elliott & Britt Engineering recently updated the Board of Supervisors on the $2,537,325 project that includes renovations to a 2.68-mile section of Country Club Road and roundabout to replace the four-way stop at the north entrance of Back Acres Country Club where it connects with Gabbert Drive and Shands Bottom Road.
“Some things have been pushed back because of the weather but significant process is being made,” McLeod said. “The contractor is running a little behind, but with some good weather he should be able to make up the difference. I was told at the beginning of April the entire project will be completed in five or six weeks, so we expect it to be finished the first or second week of May.”
Ste-Bil Grading Inc., the contractor for the entire project, is also widening Country Club Road from Gabbert Drive to the Como Trace entrance and will eventually overlay it with asphalt. The road is being expanded on the east side up to six feet to make room for bicycles, golf carts and walking lane.
Tate County Supervisors presented a proposal to the public in November 2019 for renovations to Country Club Road and received $2.5 million from the Mississippi legislature for the upgrades. The project includes shaving three to four feet off two problematic hills – north and south of May Drive – on Country Club Road to correct drainage problems and provide a better sight view for drivers.
McLeod said crews have been repairing and smoothing over driveway entrances to residences along Country Club Road the past several weeks that were roughed up when the original layer of asphalt was removed.
