Coldwater has a new Ward 4 representative on its Board of Aldermen.
Levon Wayne Hayes defeated Alice Mae Thomas 98-73 in a special election Tuesday, March 8, to claim the spot Thomas held since winning the general election last June.
The results of that election, in which Thomas beat Hayes by 15 votes, were contested by Hayes. A court order from the Tate County Circuit Clerk’s Office signed by attorneys representing Hayes and Thomas stated several factors for a special election.
The document said after discovery, material facts exist regarding the validity of the total number of votes that were cast 2021 Coldwater general election for the Ward 4 Alderman seat, the integrity of the ballot box and the box containing absentee ballots, and the commingling of affidavit, absentee, and curbside ballots by election officials.
The court order stated the extent of those factors led to the impossibility to reconcile true and accurate results of the election between Hayes and Thomas.
Hayes will officially begin representing Coldwater citizens who reside in Ward 4 at the next monthly meeting of the Board of Aldermen on Tuesday, April 5.
Other Coldwater board members include Keith Mack, Ward 1; Patrick Carr, Ward 2; Paulette Davis, Ward 3; and Regina Kimmons, alderman at large.
