Celebrities, sports icons and historical figures were on display recently at Senatobia Elementary School.
Second grade classes at SES hosted their annual wax museum Friday, Feb. 17. The project provided students a chance to learn but have some fun as well.
“This begins when we start reading biographies,” said second-grade instructor Carrie Foresman. “The kids learn what biographies are and how to read them. Then, they pick a person they want to research and read about them and write their own biographies.”
Students at SES made their way through second-grade classrooms set up with displays featuring famous people including Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, Theodore Roosevelt, Michael Jordan, George Washington Carver, Martin Luther King Jr., Walt Disney, Stan Lee, Abe Lincoln, Kobe Bryant and Dolly Parton.
Visitors were offered the opportunity to press a makeshift button at each display to receive a brief summary of a historical figure’s life and achievements, written and recited by the second-grade student dressed as that particular individual. Each booth also featured a tri-fold poster board with facts and historical dates in that important person’s life.
“It’s basically a fun way to learn and the kids really enjoy it,” Foresman added.
