Wreck claims two lives in northwest Mississippi
There were six fatalities on the state’s largest roads during the 2021 Labor Day holiday weekend, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
State troopers worked more than 140 accidents that lead to six deaths, including two in northwest Mississippi.
A report from MHP stated a wreck Sunday, Sept. 5, claimed the lives of two people in Tunica County at the intersection of U.S. Highway 61 and Green River Road. The report said Nrsimha Broomfield, 30, of Memphis, was traveling southbound on U.S. 61 in a 2006 Chevy Cobalt just before 6 a.m. A 2014 Nissan Versa driven by Chad Little, 64, of Southaven, pulled out of a side road and was struck in the driver's side. Chad Little and rear passenger Brett Little received fatal injuries from the crash and were both pronounced dead on the scene.
A three-year-old girl from Holly Springs died from injuries in a Grenada County wreck on Saturday, Sept. 4. MHP reported a 2011 Toyota Sequoia driven by Abigail Branch, 37, of Holly Springs, was traveling north on State Highway 7 when a 2007 Nissan Altima driven by Ladarrius Campbell, 21, of Grenada, pulled out of a side road. The SUV hit the driver's side of the sedan. Campbell received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene. Janie Branch, 3, of Holly Springs, was transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, where she later succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.
Another fatal crash claimed the lives of two people, including a three-year old boy, in Lincoln County in south Mississippi. All vehicle accidents remain under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
During the three-day Labor Day enforcement period that ended at midnight Monday, Sept. 6, MHP issued 6,635 citations statewide – including 186 driving under the influence arrests, 330 seat belt citations, and 113 child restraint citations.
MHP also investigated 146 motor vehicle crashes with 54 injuries. Troopers assisted with heavy traffic issues throughout the enforcement period due to Hurricane Ida recovery efforts.
Batesville-based Troop E which covers northwest Mississippi, made 36 arrests, including 34 for DUI and two for drug-related crimes. Troop E also issued 49 tickets for seat belt violations and 17 for no child restraint.
Locally, troopers worked 12 collisions resulting in 11 injuries.
