A local woman was one of two fatalities during the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s New Year’s holiday enforcement period.
MHP identified the female as Crystal Parks, 23, of Sarah, who died in a two-vehicle crash Thursday, Dec. 30, on U.S. Highway 51 near Wheeler Road south of Hernando at approximately 8:10 a.m. A report from MHP stated Parks was traveling south when her 2009 Chevrolet Impala collided with a northbound 2006 Dodge Durango driven by Catlin Carlisle, 31, of Coldwater. Carlisle suffered moderate injuries in the accident, according to MHP.
The other fatality occurred Saturday, Jan. 1, at approximately 4:38 a.m., on I-20 near the 22-mile marker in Hinds County.
Both crashes remain under investigation by MHP.
During the four-day enforcement period which ran from Thursday, Dec. 30 through Sunday, Jan. 2, troopers issued 14,792 citations, an increase of more than 136% compared to the 6,254 that were written during the previous New Year’s holiday.
Statistics in most criteria followed the same trend. The number of seat belt and child restrain citations nearly quadrupled from 363 to 1,429. Driving under the influence arrests went from 184 last year to 279, an increase of 52%. Troopers worked 178 crashes statewide, resulting in 25 injuries.
Batesville-based Troop E, which covers 10 counties in northwest Mississippi, was responsible for 34 of the 279 DUI arrests across the state. Troop E also made 10 drug arrests, worked 31 traffic accidents with four injuries, issued 139 tickets to motorists for not wearing a seat belt, and 16 citations for no child restraint in vehicle.
