With Christmas Break arriving this week for local students, the boys’ basketball teams of Independence and Senatobia were looking for wins to close out 2024 on a high note.
Both teams did just that, with Independence earning an 80-32 blowout of Strayhorn and Senatobia picking up a much-needed 83-79 Region 2-4A win against South Pontotoc.
In the Wildcats’ win against the Mustangs, MarJuan Green led the way with 16 points, while Brandon Avant added 14 points. Kenyon Dowl also picked up 10 points to further aid Independence.
For Senatobia, the Warriors withstood a late rally from South Pontotoc to pick up the win at home. SHS improved to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in Region 2-4A, while Independence improved its season record to 9-3 and 2-1 in Region 2-3A.
Senatobia will face Horn Lake at 6 P.M. on Friday, December 20, as part of the Shan Whiteside Classic at DeSoto Central. Independence’s next game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 21 against Pontotoc in a tournament at Biggersville High School.
