Dear Editor,
I am heartsick. I mourn the loss of this week’s victims of violence in Memphis. But I also mourn the loss of Memphis.
I was lucky enough to go shopping downtown with my mother in stores like Goldsmiths and Lowensteins. My friend and I visited city parks, the zoo, the Pink Palace, and Victorian Village just to name a few. And when I learned to drive one of my first destinations was Southland Mall where we would spend hours going in every shop. We also went to countless concerts at the Mid-South Coliseum.
When I became an adult, two of my children were born in a Memphis hospital. I was always thankful that the best medical community was just 40 miles from my small town. I had the best of both worlds, the beauty and closeness of my small town just minutes away from art, music, shopping, the airport, doctors and so much more.
You know what? I WAS NEVER AFRAID. Let’s get on our knees and pray for the victims and their loved ones and also for help for our Memphis. She needs reviving.
Sincerely,
Nancy Patterson
