Senatobia Police Department is helping to spread Christmas cheer this holiday season by bringing joy to children in need; however, the department is seeking help from the community.
This year’s Shop with a Cop will occur Thursday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. Each year the program aims to provide fun for several of Senatobia’s children while creating positive relationships with local law enforcement.
On the day of the event, uniformed officers from SPD volunteer their time to be with children, ages six to 12, handpicked by school officials from the city and spend approximately an hour walking the aisles at Walmart in Senatobia picking out toys and clothing.
The event is only made possible by donated contributions from area citizens and businesses.
Last year the program welcomed more than $3,200 donated from residents. The funds went to serve 21 area children in need.
Recently promoted Sergeant Angelica Maze is spearheading this year’s event. Maze is the School Resource Officer at Senatobia Elementary School and has first-hand knowledge on how important the event is to the children.
“Over the years, I have noticed how excited the students were when they were selected for the Shop with a Cop program. I noticed a change in the family’s attitudes and behaviors after being a part of the program,” said Sgt. Maze. “This program provides a need for those families, and it helps build a trusting relationship between the family and law enforcement.”
Senatobia Police Chief Richard Chandler said the event is special to him. “This is a great opportunity for officers to be able to do something special for youth and their families during this time of year,” said Chief Chandler.
Monetary donations are currently being accepted from citizens and business owners to sponsor Shop with a Cop. Checks can made out to “Senatobia Main Street” and earmarked “Shop with a Cop”.
“We are really looking forward to the event and are very thankful for the donations and for our local Walmart and its willingness to host the event,” said Chief Chandler.
