A two-vehicle accident on Interstate 55 in Senatobia claimed the life of a one-year-old child from Yazoo County, according to law enforcement officials.
Assistant Police Chief Matt Defore said officers were dispatched Saturday, Sept. 11, at approximately 11:20 a.m., to I-55 close to the main Senatobia exit after receiving reports of an accident near the construction zone.
Officers observed a Chevrolet Tahoe rolled over on its side in the median after arriving on scene and were notified a 13-year-old child was trapped inside the vehicle.
Defore said Senatobia Fire & Rescue were able to safely remove the child, but an infant inside the Tahoe was pronounced dead on scene. Traffic was at a standstill on I-55 as a medical helicopter landed to transport another infant patient to a Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.
Two other children in the Tahoe were taken to Le Bonheur by ambulance, according to Defore. The adult driver of the Tahoe and another child were transported by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto in Southaven.
Defore said all three occupants in the other vehicle involved in the accident were not injured.
A preliminary investigation by the Senatobia Police Department indicated both vehicles were traveling northbound on I-55 when they encountered traffic congestion near the construction zone. A report said the two vehicles made contact just before the Tahoe merged into an adjacent lane, lost control and rolled over in the median.
SPD did not release the names of the occupants of the Tahoe or the deceased child.
