A man arrested by the Tate County Sheriff’s Office had an extra charge tacked on after he attempted to escape from deputies.
Captain Lisa Sanders identified the suspect as Bill E. Ward, 31, of Coldwater, who was charged with sexual battery and possession of child pornography. Ward was booked at the Tate County Jail on Sunday, Nov. 6, and held without bond after his initial appearance in Tate County Justice Court.
Sanders said TCSO received information in reference to allegations of child exploitation at a Coldwater residence in the 30 block of Crestfield Cove. Ward, who is listed on the Mississippi Sex Offender Registry, was taken into custody in connection with the investigation.
Despite being restrained with handcuffs in the back seat of a patrol unit vehicle, Sanders said Ward attempted to escape during transport to the Tate County Jail by kicking out a rear passenger window and jumping from the vehicle traveling at an estimated 45 miles per hour.
Sanders said Ward was treated on scene for various injuries before he was admitted to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Southaven. Ward was released from the hospital a short time later and deputies transported him without incident to the Tate County Jail where a charge of attempted escape was added.
The case remains under investigation by the Tate County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information is urged to call TCSO at 662-562-4434 or the Tate County Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 662-301-1111.
