James Tate “Jim” Gabbert, Jr., of Hernando died June 20, 2023 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, TN. He was 79. He leaves behind his sisters, Gwen Hogan (Larry) and Jill Ferguson (Mike) of Senatobia, and five nephews and nieces. His brother, Bill Gabbert, predeceased him. A son of James and Eleanor Gabbert, Jim grew up in Senatobia and graduated from Senatobia High School. He earned a B.S. in mathematics at Millsaps College, where he served as business manager of the campus newspaper and was a member of Kappa Alpha and Omicron Delta Kappa. With a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship, he studied statistics at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Subsequently he earned an M.S. in statistics from Virginia Tech and a Master of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music. Jim served as a statistician for Raytheon Corp. and an administrator in the business schools of MIT and the University of California at Berkeley. Later he worked as an editor for Sybex Corp. in Alameda, Calif., and Omega Performance Corp. in San Francisco and Charlotte. He also served as organist and choir director for several churches. Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 30, 2023 at Calvary Episcopal Church, 102 N. Second St., Memphis, TN 38103, where Jim was a member. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to Calvary Episcopal Church, 102 N, Second St., Memphis, TN 38103; Millsaps College, 1701 N. State St., Jackson, MS 39210; or another charity of your choice. Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.
