Fresh off a series victory against Alcorn Central in the first round of the Class 3A Playoffs, the Independence Wildcats prepared for a tough second round matchup against Amory.
Unfortunately, Amory would cut the Wildcats’ postseason journey short, as Independence fell by a pair of 17-0 and 15-4 finals over the weekend.
After Independence went scoreless in the top half of the first inning of Game 1, Amory made quick work of the Wildcats, scoring a whopping 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Panthers would pick up three more runs in the second inning, while holding IHS scoreless over three frames, earning a quick run-rule shutout victory.
Although the second game at Independence was a little more competitive, the Panthers still managed to end the game in run-rule fashion after scoring eight runs in the top half of the sixth inning.
Tied at 2-2 entering the fourth inning, Amory tacked on five runs in the frame to make it a 7-2 lead. Independence gained two runs back in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap to 7-4, but the Panthers’ big sixth inning ultimately ended the series and the Wildcats’ season.
Independence ends the 2022 season with a 17-13 overall record and the Region 2-3A championship.
