One team was looking for its second win of the season and another was searching to snap a two-game losing skid.
Both storylines came true for Independence and Magnolia Heights last Friday evening, as the Wildcats shutout Byhalia, 26-0, and the Chiefs defeated Lee Academy (Miss.), .
Independence was partially aided by a 15-yard touchdown pass under pressure from Walker to Keitavious Moore. Other notable non-scoring plays that set up touchdowns were a 34-yard run from Walker, a 21-yard pass from Brady Adams to Cristofer Lane and another 21-yard pass on the run from Adams to Walker.
For Magnolia Heights, the Chiefs scored 14 points apiece in the first two quarters, building a 28-12 lead at halftime. In the second half, MHS would outscore the Colts by a 21-6 margin, clinching coach Russ Whiteside’s first win of the season.
With the wins, Independence improved to 2-0 overall, while Magnolia Heights jumped to 1-2 on the season. The Wildcats will take on Senatobia (2-0) on Friday evening at Varner Field, while the Chiefs are slated to travel to Marshall Academy (2-1), who are on a two-game winning streak.
Both games are set for 7 P.M. kickoffs. Magnolia Heights will also have its game carried live on SuperTalk North Mississippi 93.7 FM, for fans unable to attend.

Sept. 1 – Tishomingo County 55, Strayhorn 0
A trip to Iuka turned out to be a forgettable one for Strayhorn, as the Mustangs dropped a 55-0 loss to Class 4A foe Tishomingo County.
The Mustangs surrendered 13 points in the first quarter, before a 22-point second quarter put the Braves ahead 35-0 at the halftime break.
With the loss, Strayhorn drops to 1-1 on the season. The Mustangs will host North Delta (2-1) on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 P.M. The Green Wave are coming off a 20-13 loss to Marshall Academy.
