Sections of two streets in downtown Senatobia will be designated exclusively for one-way traffic soon.
The city’s Board of Alderman agreed to make Tate Street eastward from Ward to Front Street and Center Street south to the Senatobia Public Library one-way only. The changes will become official sometime this spring after construction and upgrades to those streets are finished.
“We received input from business owners and believe this will make those areas safer for traffic and pedestrians,” Mayor Greg Graves said.
Center Street from Main to Tate Street has been strictly one-way traffic the last couple of years. The change became necessary after new businesses opened on Center Street, leading to the demand for additional parking.
Graves said making Center Street one-way to the library will also provide more parking options for events in Gabbert Park, especially since the plan includes adding skewed or angled parking spaces on both sides of Center Street.
Instead of using the library’s outlet drive onto Ward Street, the city is constructing its own egress between the library and Leigh Ann Darby Law Office building on Ward.
The city has already constructed additional sidewalks on a section of Tate Street that will be one-way. Graves said some angled parking spots will be added on the south side of Tate for the businesses currently operating there.
