What If the Key to Everything You Want in Life… Is Letting Go?
As we step further into 2025, many of us are chasing big dreams. We want revival in our hearts, influence in our communities, and hope in our world. But here’s the truth: none of that happens because of our effort alone. Revival isn’t something we manufacture. Influence doesn’t come just because we’re talented. Hope isn’t a feeling we conjure up. It all begins in one place - surrender.
Surrender is one of the hardest things to do, but it’s also the most freeing. It’s the key to everything God wants to do in and through us. He doesn’t ask for perfection; He asks us to trust Him.
A Life-Changing Moment on the Water
Let’s look at a powerful example of surrender in Luke 5:1-11.
Picture this: Peter, a seasoned fisherman, had spent the entire night working with zero results. Frustrated and exhausted, he was ready to call it quits. Then Jesus showed up. Jesus told Peter to cast his nets one more time. It didn’t make sense. Peter had been fishing for years, he knew how this worked. But something about Jesus made him pause.
"Master, we’ve worked hard all night and caught nothing. But because You say so, I will let down the nets." - Luke 5:5
Peter obeyed, and the results were overwhelming: so many fish that the nets began to break. That’s the power of surrender. When we trust God, He does more than we could ever imagine.
THREE THINGS THAT KEEP US FROM SURRENDERING
ONE | PRIDE - "I KNOW BEST."
Let’s be honest. How often do we say, “I’ve got this, God”? We want control. We think we know better. But surrender begins when we admit that God’s ways are higher than ours. Peter could have ignored Jesus. After all, he was the fisherman, and Jesus was a carpenter. But when he let go of his pride, everything changed.
Trust God even when it doesn’t make sense. Maybe you’re trying to handle friendships, relationships, school, or work your way. What would happen if you let God lead?
"To follow Jesus, we must learn to die to our self-will, to let go of our plans, and trust that His are better." - John Mark Comer
TWO | FEAR - "WHAT IF I LOSE CONTROL?"
Surrender can feel risky. Fear whispers, “What if I trust God and it doesn’t work out?”
Peter had already failed all night. He had every reason to doubt. But he obeyed anyway. Faith isn’t the absence of fear; it’s trusting God even when you’re afraid. Maybe you’re scared to share your faith. Maybe you don’t want to step out of your comfort zone. But what if God is calling you to something greater?
The next time fear creeps in, push through and take the step anyway.
"True faith isn’t the absence of fear; it’s the courage to take the next step, even when you’re afraid." - Chris Hodges
THREE | COMFORT - "I LIKE THINGS THE WAY THEY ARE."
Peter was used to fishing the same way, in the same place. It was comfortable. But Jesus doesn’t call us to stay comfortable; He calls us to step out in faith. Maybe God is nudging you to invite someone to church, join a team, or stand up for what’s right. It’s scary, but growth happens in the uncomfortable spaces.
Step out. The greatest stories start when we leave our comfort zones.
"God is far more interested in who you’re becoming than what you’re doing." - Francis Chan
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SURRENDER?
ONE | SURRENDER BRINGS REVIVAL.
When Peter obeyed, the miracle happened immediately. You don’t have to fix yourself before you come to God. Just let Him work in you.
"Revival isn’t an event; it’s what happens when ordinary people choose to trust God with their whole heart." - John Mark Comer
TWO | SURRENDER BUILDS INFLUENCE.
Jesus told Peter, “From now on, you will fish for people.” God took Peter’s ordinary life and gave it eternal significance. Your influence isn’t about being famous, it’s about pointing people to Jesus.
"You don’t need a platform to have influence; you just need a surrendered heart." - Chris Hodges
THREE | SURRENDER SPREADS HOPE.
Peter left his nets behind and followed Jesus, trusting that life with Him was worth it. Hope isn’t something we keep to ourselves. When we surrender, people will notice the difference in us.
"Hope isn’t something you hoard; it’s something you give away because of what Jesus has done for you." - Francis Chan
THE CALL TO SURRENDER
God is inviting you into something bigger than yourself. But it starts with saying, like Peter, “Because You say so, I will.”
Revival starts in you. Influence happens through you. Hope is shared because of Jesus in you.
So, what’s holding you back? Is it pride? Is it fear? Is it comfort?
Whatever it is, let go and let God. This is your year to surrender.
