Imagine you’re praying for something big: a new opportunity, a dream to come true, or a way for God to show up in your life. That’s incredible! But let me ask you: if God answered your prayer today, would you be ready for it?
Prayer without preparation is like asking for rain but forgetting to plant seeds. God isn’t just interested in giving you what you ask for; He’s invested in making sure you can handle it.
Today, we’re going to look at a story in Luke where preparation mattered, a story that will help us get ready for the incredible things God wants to do in our lives.
In Luke 19:11-27, Jesus tells the Parable of the Talents (also called the Parable of the Minas). A master is about to go on a long journey, so he calls his servants together and gives each of them a mina, a valuable amount of money worth about three months’ wages.
He tells them, “Put this money to work until I come back.” The master didn’t just give them money for safekeeping; he wanted them to use it and grow it. This was their gift, something they didn’t earn but were trusted to manage. From this story, I want to share three key points that can help us understand how to use what God has given us.
ONE | THE GIFT
The master in this story represents God, and we are the servants. Just like the servants were given a mina, God has given you gifts, talents, and opportunities. You didn’t earn them, but they are valuable, and God has trusted you to use them.
What has God placed in your hands? It might be your ability to encourage others, your skills in sports, your talent in art or music, or even your ability to make people laugh and feel included.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God created you on purpose, for a purpose, and with a purpose and gave you gifts to fulfill it. The question is, are you using what God has given you?
TWO | THE TEST
When the master came back, he asked the servants to show what they had done with their gifts. The first servant had multiplied the mina ten times, and the second had multiplied it five times. The master praised them and gave them even bigger responsibilities; they were put in charge of cities! But the third servant didn’t do anything with his mina. He said he was afraid of losing it, so he hid it in a cloth and gave it back. The master wasn’t pleased. He said, “You could have at least put it in the bank to earn interest!”
This was the test. The master didn’t expect them all to have the same results, but he did expect them to try. The test wasn’t about how much they had; it was about what they did with it. God does the same with us. He doesn’t expect perfection, but He does expect faithfulness. Are you doing the best you can with what God has given you?
James 1:22 reminds us, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” God wants us to take action with the gifts He’s given us. The test of our faith is not just what we believe but how we live it out.
THREE | THE REWARD
For the servants who used their gifts well, the master gave them greater rewards. The first servant was given authority over ten cities, and the second over five. But the servant who didn’t use his gift lost even the little he had. This shows us an important truth: faithfulness leads to greater opportunities, but neglect can lead to missed blessings.
God wants to reward us for being faithful with what He’s given us. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” The reward isn’t just about what we get; it’s about becoming the kind of person God can trust with more.
So, how can we prepare for what God wants to do in our lives? Here are three practical steps:
ONE | RECOGNIZE YOUR GIFT
Think about the talents, opportunities, and responsibilities God has already given you. What has He placed in your hands that you can use for His glory?
TWO | TAKE THE TEST
Don’t be afraid to take action, even if it’s small. Whether it’s helping a friend, volunteering, or practicing your skills, do something with what God has given you.
THREE | TRUST GOD FOR THE REWARD
Faithfulness doesn’t always bring instant results, but God sees your efforts. Stay consistent and trust that He will bless you in His timing.
This parable isn’t just about the servants; it’s about us. God has given each of us gifts, and He’s asking us to be faithful with them. If God gave you what you’re praying for, would you be ready for it?
2025 is not just about receiving blessings; it’s about becoming the person who can carry them.
Luke 16:10: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”
This week, take one small step to use what God has given you and trust Him for the results!
