Last week, we considered three comparisons of Jesus’ two parables in Matthew 13:44–46. In both parables, the men made precious discoveries, perfect sacrifices, and significant purchases. Now, let us contrast the two parables.
First, it is possible that there is a difference in the economical statuses of the two men of the parables. Many believe the man who found the treasure in the field would have been in a lower class: a farmer, or even one who was an impoverished gleaner (cf. Leviticus 19:10; Deuteronomy 24:21). Yet, in the second parable, a businessman that deals in pearls is more likely to have wealth. Let us be reminded that no matter one’s lot in life, the church is for all! The gospel is for all! “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26–28).
Then, there is a contrast in the discovery methods. It seems the man in the field happened upon the treasure. We are told that the merchant was “seeking goodly pearls.” It is the reality that some happen upon the church (or the truth that leads them to the church). Even so, some are seeking the church (or the truth that leads them to the church). Let the church be ready in every case (Matthew 28:19–20)!
How precious is the church? What are we willing to sacrifice in this precious discovery? Will we remain committed to our contractual agreement? Do we recognize that the church is for any (no matter their ethnicity, economical status, social status, et al.) who will obey Jesus? Are we ready to teach any, whether they happen upon us or are actively seeking?
In conclusion, let us not miss the consideration of these parables from Jesus’ perspective. Indeed, the church is the hidden treasure and the pearl of great price. Jesus’ value of our precious souls is so great that He gave the perfect sacrifice (cf. 1 Corinthians 5:7; Hebrews 9:26; 10:12) to purchase the church with His own blood (cf. Acts 20:28). Paul wrote, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:5–8).
Is the church precious to you? Are you a part of Christ’s church?
