The new fiscal year for the Mississippi Department of Revenue began the first of July with the two municipalities in Tate County earning a boost in sales tax collections. Mississippi sales tax collections are based on a three-month cycle. Checks disbursed by MDR in July were from sales made in May and taxes paid to the state in June. State and municipality budgets depend primarily on sales tax revenue. All municipalities in the state receive a portion of the sales tax collected within their corporate limits. Senatobia generated $216,460 in July revenue, compared to $187,643 in July of 2019 for an increase of 13.4 percent. That comes on the heels of an 11.5 percent hike in June revenue for the city, which has seen an upsurge in sales tax collections six consecutive months. The town of Coldwater generated $22,840 in July revenue, compared to $19,359 in July of 2019 for an increase of 15.3 percent. North Mississippi municipalities with increases in July 2020 sales tax collections include: • Batesville received $468,774, up 19.0 percent from $379,913 in July 2019 • Hernando received $368,485, up 16.0 percent from $309,831 in July 2019 • Sardis received $33,502, up 13.4 percent from $29,044 in July 2019 • Southaven received $1,359,255, up 4.6 percent from $1,297,102 in July 2019 • Tunica received $34,889, up 74.1 percent from $9,058 in July 2019 North Mississippi municipalities with decreases in July 2020 sales tax collections include: • Como received $13,427, down 16.0 percent from $15,981 in July 2019 Statewide sales tax diversions that were divided among municipalities in Mississippi for July of 2020 totaled $41,756,280 compared to $38,120,262 in July of 2019. That’s an increase of $3,636,018 or 8.8 percent.
