Janice Canerdy, president of the Mississippi Poetry Society, announced Wednesday (3/1) in an email message to the MPS members that this year’s participant in the Blackberry Peach Poetry Slam Competition will be William Hill of Southaven.
The Black Berry Peach Poetry Slam is held annually during The National Federation of State Poetry Societies Convention. This year it will be held in West Des Moines, IA.
Hill, who has served as president of the Poetry Society of Tennessee and as one of the founding board members of the Southaven Arts Council, now serves as chaplain of the Mid-South Christian Writers Conference. He is also an artist and an evangelist with If I Have not Love Ministries out of West Point, MS.
When asked about the competition, Rev. Hill said, “Off the top of my head, I can think of 7 or 8 people who could do this as well or better than I can. I’m just blessed and honored to be available to represent the state I love and the society that has helped me grow as a poet.” He then added, “The Convention is not until June, in the meantime, I would love to read some of my work to any civic or church group that might need a speaker.”
