For the past week, we have received countless emails and social media messages from the public about the situation concerning Buddy the dog and the child who committed the heinous crime. (The story can be found on the front page of this edition.)
Most of the messages have been an outcry of justice for Buddy. There has been a profound similarity in the tone of the messages. People are horrified that a situation like this could happen.
We agree. Our hearts hurt for the poor animal who is currently suffering. But, we are also concerned for the child. We wonder what might be the circumstances of this child’s mental wellbeing. We wonder what this child’s life is like at home, school and with friends and family.
We believe Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance had no choice in his actions. The law currently protects children under 12. Sheriff Lance cannot begin forcing punishment on a child the very law protects.
While the case is frustrating and heart-wrenching on all accounts, we’ll continue to pray for all involved. We stand with Sheriff Lance on enforcing the laws as heartbreaking as they may be.
