Senatobia’s trophy case might be running out of room, but that’s just fine for coach Shane Baltz and company.
Baltz and his Senatobia track teams did it again last weekend, as the Warriors and Lady Warriors swept Class 3A titles at the MHSAA Class 3A Championship meet in Pearl.
On the women’s side, Senatobia compiled 102 points, beating out St. Andrew’s Episcopal School and Tylertown, which finished with 96 and 94 points, respectively. The Warriors’ finished with 163 points on the boys’ side, finishing ahead of second place Tylertown, who compiled 123 points.
Senatobia was led on the girls’ side by a second-place finish from senior Anna Clark in the 3200-meter run, earning a time of 12:30.12. Junior Angel Wright placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.92, while Markevia Guice’s 49.37 result helped her to earn second place in the 300-meter hurdles.
However, the Lady Warriors’ state championship was clinched in the final event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay. There, Guice, Wright, Lulu Bobo and Kamiyah Whiting finished second overall, surpassing Tylertown for the overall Class 3A girls’ title.
Sophomore JaBrysten Abram was one of several Senatobia boys to finish with individual state titles, winning in the 110 and 300-meter hurdles with results of 14.90 and 40.40, respectively. Freshman Austin Winstead also finished first in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:56.02, while senior LaJoshua Jackson placed first in the discus and shot put finals.
Senatobia’s 4x800-meter relay team also earned a first-place finish, led by J.C. Dunlop, Koby Rhone, Braxton Taylor and Brandon Williams.
During his tenure at Senatobia, Baltz has now compiled nine state championships from cross country and track. Check out next week’s edition of the Tate Record for an interview with Baltz, regarding this year’s titles and what made these particular championships stand out.
