Presents have been opened and the trees are coming down. We are all doing a little reflecting over the past few weeks as Christmas comes to a close and we begin our plans for the coming new year.
Just imagine the wonder that was happening in Bethlehem shortly after the birth of Christ.
With the excitement going on in the town because of the census, it is probable that few people had even taken notice of Jesus’ birth.
Even though the shepherds had gone about joyfully, almost ecstatically, proclaiming the Good News, people most likely wondered “what baby?” “I didn’t see a baby”.
They were so busy with their own celebrations they had missed the birth of the Son of God, the long promised Savior of the world.
While there were bits and pieces of information and conversations that had remained concerning the great event, many simply picked up and continued on with their daily routines as though nothing had happened and nothing changed.
However, there were some that had been affected by Jesus' birth and would forever be radicaly changed.
Mary and Joseph were changed as they saw the hand of God move through their lives guiding and shaping every situation according to His promise and good purpose.
The Shephards would never again look at the night sky as they had in the past without recalling the spectacular events that had forever changed them.
Many others that may not have been mentioned, but we can conclude through the events in the story of the nativity that were forever changed in some way or another.
As time went by, we know that word of the birth of Jesus reached other towns, cities and nations and soon the entire world.
What about you? As you go about picking up the torn wrapping paper and now empty packages from Christmas morning and you pack away all the new gifts or as you travel back home or prepare to head back to work and as you explore how to spend your Christmas cash, what difference has Christmas made in your life?
Did the fact that your Savior was born make a difference in your life this year? Will you let Him make a difference in your life this upcoming year?
While many celebrated Christmas this year, one might wonder how many really understood the reason because of this great celebration? Was it the center of their celebration or part of a checklist or after thought.
After the dust settles from the hustle and rush of buying, wrapping, opening gifts, stuffing ourselves with holiday treats and enjoying the company of friends and family is over, perhaps it might do us all good to pause and truly reflect on what took place that blessed Christmas moment. This is what Mary the mother of Jesus did.
"Mary pondered and hid in her heart" refers to a specific passage in the Bible found in Luke 2:19 where it is described how Mary, the mother of Jesus, thoughtfully reflected upon and retained the events surrounding Jesus' birth and early life. Essentially, it means she carefully considered and stored these experiences within her heart, pondering their significance and implications.
Mary's actions highlight a deep spiritual practice of contemplation and reflection. She didn't just passively observe the events, but she actively engaged with them, seeking deeper understanding and the spiritual meaning in them.
Mary knew a Savior had been born, who was Christ the Lord! Her Savior!
The Savior grew, lived a sinless life, died on a cross, rose again, and now intercedes between God and man on behalf of those who believe.
He wants to be a friend who sticks closer than a brother. He wants to set men free from the bondage of their sin. He wants those who are weary and heavy-burdened to come to Him. He wants to bless our lives with true peace.
Hope was born at Christmas and this part of the Christmas season can last throughout the coming year and will most certainly last throughout eternity!
Hold Fast,
Bren
