Todd’s Feed and Hardware celebrating 28 years
After spending the last 28 years in the same location, Todd’s Feed and Hardware in Independence has become a one-stop shop for a variety of needs for home, garden and farming supplies in Tate County.
But Deston Todd, who has been part of the business since he was a teenager, said serving local customers is just part of the store’s success.
“We have folks that drive all the way down from Collierville and other places in Shelby and DeSoto County in the spring to shop in our greenhouse,” Todd pointed out. “We even have some people come up from Charleston.”
A greenhouse filled with shrubs, bedding plants, flowers and other nursery and landscaping needs for any home improvement project are what prod customers to flock to Todd’s Feed and Hardware when temperatures begin to warm.
The rest of the year the shelves are fully stocked with tools, plumbing electrical and a bevy of other hardware supplies for home repair, as well as a huge selection of feed and seed for farmers and animal owners. The store also sells fruits, vegetables and other locally grown produce during the summer.
Todd’s Feed and Hardware was selected Agribusiness of the Year at the 25th annual meeting of the Tate County Economic Development Foundation in February of 2020.
Richard Todd, Deston’s father, originally opened the business in 1993. Richard was honored at the annual Independence Christmas parade in December and served as grand marshal in appreciation for his service and dedication to the community.
“That tickled him to death to be chosen for that,” said Todd, a 1998 graduate of Independence High School.
Todd said he worked at the store throughout high school and left for a few years to go to college at Ole Miss before returning to run the family business full time close to 17 years ago.
“This is where I want to be and I can’t imagine doing anything else,” he said. “Our customers have been loyal to us and we always want to provide them with the best service possible.”
Todd’s Feed and Hardware, located at 5479 Mississippi Highway 305 in Independence, is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon.
