Have you noticed how busy our schedules have become? Between school drop-offs, work meetings, social media scrolling, sports practices, and trying to maintain some kind of social life, our days can feel like a never-ending cycle of busyness.
One thing we must remember as followers of the way of Jesus is that He is at the center. When life gets chaotic, worship has the power to shift our focus back to Him. I firmly believe that worship changes the atmosphere and ushers in God’s presence in our lives.
One of the most powerful examples of worship in scripture comes from Acts 16:25-26. Paul and Silas had been beaten and thrown into prison for preaching the gospel. Most of us, in that situation, would probably be complaining, defeated, or full of fear. But what did they do? They worshiped.
Acts 16:25-26 NIV [25] About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. [26] Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose.
Their worship didn’t just affect them; it changed the entire atmosphere. The presence of God was so strong that the prison doors flew open, and chains were broken. That’s the power of worship. It has the ability to bring freedom, shift perspectives, and reveal God’s presence in ways we never expected.
I don’t know about you, but if it happened back then, why do you think it's not happening in our lives? I truly believe that when we encounter God, we can’t help but worship Him more and seek His face until our situations change. I want to help give you three key truths about worship.
THREE KEY TRUTHS ABOUT WORSHIP
ONE | WORSHIP PUTS JESUS AT THE CENTER
It reminds us that our lives are not about us, but about Him. Worship redirects our focus from our problems to the One who holds the solutions.
TWO | WORSHIP CHANGES THE ATMOSPHERE
Just like in Acts 16, worship can shift environments. Whether in a church service, in your car, or at home, worship welcomes God’s presence. What more can we desire and want for our lives than that?
THREE | WORSHIP STRENGTHENS OUR FAITH
When we worship, we declare who God is, even when our circumstances try to tell us otherwise. It builds our faith and renews our trust in Him.
JESUS AT THE CENTER
There’s a song by Bethel Music called “Center” that has been on repeat for me. Even though it just came out, it’s already one of my all-time favorites. The lyrics bring us back to what truly matters: making Jesus the center of everything.
Here’s part of the song:
Maybe we’ve made this complicated
More than it was ever meant to be
Hasn’t it always been about the same thing
Lord, bring us back to simple things
That’s my prayer for all of us. That our relationship with Jesus wouldn’t be complicated, full of stress, worry, and anxiety. Instead, we’d return to the simple truth that He loves us, He’s for us, and desires to be the center of our lives.
THE HEART BEHIND WORSHIP
John Mark Comer often speaks about how modern life is full of hurry and distraction, making it hard to truly abide in Jesus. Worship helps re-center us, slowing us down and reminding us that God is near. David Crowder has often said that worship is less about music and more about the posture of the heart. Bethel Music wrote “Center” out of a desire to strip everything back and focus solely on Jesus. The theme is clear: Jesus is at the center, and nothing else matters.
WHAT’S YOUR SONG?
Now, what about you? What’s the song that keeps you centered on the goodness of God? Maybe it’s “Goodness of God,” “Graves into Gardens,” or an old hymn like “It Is Well.”
Listen to that song today and make it a goal to start your day in worship. You’d be shocked at how different your outlook on the day will become. Worship is powerful. It brings freedom, shifts perspectives, and reminds us that Jesus is always at the center.
God never called us to do life alone. If you need someone to talk to, I’m just a phone call away at 601-310-9511. Remember, the best is yet to come.
