John Humphreys Houston, 64, of Ottumwa, died April 13, 2021 at the VA Health Care System in Iowa City. He was born August 7, 1956 in Memphis, TN, the son of Robert and Mary Ann Houston Welshans. He married JoAnna Williams February 17, 1989. A graduate of Coldwater High School in Coldwater MS, John served in the US Army serving in Vietnam. Living the majority of his life in Mississippi, he worked as a truck driver and later in the airline industry. He was proud of working on the B17 Aluminum Overcast. He retired and moved to Ottumwa in 2013. John enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching sports and John Wayne movies. He enjoyed attending DAV activities, especially Casting Away With Disabilities. While living in Mississippi he was a member and Past Master of his local Masonic Lodge, member and Past Worthy Patron of Eastern Star, as well as the local KAABA Shrine, Scottish Rite and Knights Templar. Surviving is his wife, JoAnna; 4 children, Heather (Joey) Manning of Picayune, MS, Christopher (Ashley) Houston of Crenshaw, MS, Justin (Leann) Houston of Ottumwa and Asa (Cyndi) Houston of Chattanooga, TN; 16 grandchildren and one on the way; his father, Robert Welshans; his father-in-law, Larry Williams; 3 siblings, Charles “Taz” (Diane) Welshans, Trina Burkett and Tom (Emily) Welshans, all of Mississippi; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Mary Ann and Robert Roberts; an infant brother, Jimmy Welshans; his grandparents who raised him, Wilburn and Matilda Houston; and his mother-in-law, Lois Williams. Visitation was held Saturday, April 17th at Reece Funeral Home. Masonic services followed with Terry Bradley and Chaplain Doug McAntire officiating. Military services were conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Cremation followed the service. Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
