If you plan to haul unwanted rubbish to the Tate County Landfill on a Saturday, be aware of some upcoming changes taking effect in November.
Jay Luna, manager of Pea Ridge Recycling which operates the landfill, suggested to Supervisors Monday, Oct. 2, closing the site on Saturdays due to a lack of traffic.
“It’s not worth it to us to be open with the employees we have burning fuel,” Luna explained. “We have operated 24 Saturdays so far through the summer months, and it averages to about $195 worth of revenue for each of those days. We are also paying overtime rates for the employees that work on Saturdays.”
The Tate County Landfill, located at 592 Gravel Pit Road in Senatobia, has normally operated on Saturday from 7 a.m. until noon and Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.
“Some of our citizens do a lot of cleaning on weekends, so we really don’t want to shut it down every Saturday,” said Tony Sandridge, president of the Board of Supervisors.
Supervisor Daryl Ricks suggested opening the landfill one Saturday a month to offset the cost of operations, especially during the upcoming winter months when things tend to slow down. Luna suggested opening from 7 a.m. until noon the second Saturday of every month beginning November 1.
Sandridge agreed but asked Luna and Pea Ridge Recycling to keep all options open in case a second Saturday is needed every month for citizens to visit the landfill. Luna said the “one Saturday a month” policy would be reevaluated in the spring when the weather warms up.
The motion passed unanimously.
