Magnolia Heights scored a lot of points and saw the offense clicking in a 52-21 win over Bayou Academy Friday night with the stands packed for Senior Night and the Chiefs last regular home game.
Magnolia Heights coach Russ Whiteside told the team he was proud of the win and the position the Chiefs are in as the regular season ends.
“We’ve done everything we can do this season,” said Whiteside. “Now it gets fun. You’ve got a chance to do something really special.”
At 9-1 on the year and the only loss to powerhouse Jackson Academy, the Chiefs have earned a bye and will skip a week and play the winner of the Heritage/Oak Hill game in Senatobia, Friday, Nov. 14.
Magnolia Heights had control of this game most of the night.
The Chiefs scored on their second play from scrimmage with running back Jack Price getting the block on the line and into the secondary to race 64-yards for the score.
Cash Jackson’s PAT was good. Jackson did not miss the next five extra points and even kicked a 42-yard field goal at the end of the first half.
Junior running back D’Travius Jackson bulled ahead from the 19 to score the Chiefs next TD in the first quarter.
Price added a 7-yard run un-touched into the end zone.
Quarterback Brannan Overstreet then found receiver Cayden Prestage open in the corner for a perfect 15-yard TD in the second.
The Chiefs were up 31-14 at the half.
The defense set the tone for the rest of the game in the third quarter with sophomore Colton Robbins intercepting a Bayou pass and running 27 yards for the TD.
Chief QB Brannan followed that up with an 18-yard TD pass to Carter Harris and Hunter Stevens finished a seven-play drive by the Chiefs with an eight-yard run weaving up the middle.
Whiteside called off the dogs in the third quarter and let everybody play.
Bayou Academy (4-6, 0-4) would score late to send the final tally to 52-21.
