The Tate County Memorial Day observance is set for Monday, May 29 on the Coldwater Town Square. The 33rd annual event, honoring local military troops from the past and present, begins at 11 a.m.
All local citizens, veterans, active-duty service personnel and their families are invited to attend. The guest speaker for the event is Captain Henry Nixon Jr., retired Navy Command Chaplain.
Nixon retired at the rank of Captain after 32 years of distinguished service. His military service included assignments on the USS Saratoga (CV 60) during Desert Storm; and Marine Forces Pacific, Hawaii and Marine Forces Central Command, Bahrain where he served as supervisory Chaplain to Marines deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Djibouti, East Africa.
Nixon was awarded the NAACP “Roy Wilkins Renown Service Award” for his contribution to Navy Equal Opportunity.
Nixon has served the Memphis community as Chairman of the Board of Directors, "Regional One Health" Foundation; President, Ravencrest Homeowners Association; and Director of Christian Education, North Shelby County District Association.
