Playing three games in two days last weekend, Senatobia earned a 9-2 win on the road against Water Valley, before splitting a Saturday twinbill against French Camp Academy and Central Holmes Christian School.
In last Friday’s victory at Water Valley, the Warriors broke open a scoreless game with a three-run top of the second inning, building a 3-0 lead that would hold until the fifth inning. Senatobia plated four runs in the top of the fifth to widen the gap to 7-0, only for the Blue Devils to respond with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning.
Water Valley’s momentum was brief however, as Senatobia scored a run in each of the next two frames, earning the win with 12 hits and three errors.
Brodie Coppedge led the Warriors’ efforts at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Caleb Scruggs, Haidyn Smith and McGee Thompson finished with two base hits apiece. Both of Thompson’s hits were good for doubles.
Evans Sealy pitched five complete frames to earn the win for Senatobia, dishing eight strikeouts against three walks and an earned run. Scruggs and Javarri Miller combined for the last two innings pitched, with both players finishing with a strikeout.
In an 8-7 win against French Camp, the Warriors withstood a two-run rally from the Panthers in the top half of the seventh, as a groundout to third base ended the threat.
French Camp opened the game with a 2-0 lead after the top half of the first, but Senatobia responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. The Warriors also tacked on a run in the bottom of the second, advancing their lead to 6-2.
French Camp battled back for two more runs in the top of the third, closing the gap to 6-4. Both teams went scoreless over the next two innings, until the Panthers got another run across the plate in the top of the sixth, pulling within a run.
A walk and an error helped Senatobia get a pair of runners on base with one out in the bottom of the sixth, and a sacrifice fly from Miller to center field helped get a run back for the Warriors. With two outs, Camryn Hankins delivered an RBI-single, boosting SHS to the 8-5 advantage.
With two outs on the board in the top of the seventh, the Panthers began to rally with a single and an RBI-double. Another base hit, a one-run single, pulled French Camp back within 8-7, before the groundout to third ended the game for a close Senatobia win.
French Camp outhit Senatobia 8-4 in the loss, but the Panthers committed three costly errors. Sealy’s two-run double was the biggest highlight at the plate for the Warriors.
Senatobia used four pitchers in the win, as Miller started the first 2.1 innings, issuing four runs and six walks with two strikeouts. Smith lasted 1.2 frames for the Warriors, followed by Coppedge for two full innings and Scruggs for the final frame.
Unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to replicate that success in the final game of the day at Central Holmes Christian. Senatobia got a run in the top of the first and one in the sixth, but gave up a combined seven runs to Central Holmes in the first two innings.
Senatobia was limited to a single hit, which came off the bat of Coppedge. The Warriors used three pitchers in the loss, as starter Silas King lasted 1.1 innings with a strikeout against three walks and five earned runs allowed. Ayden Ward was the most effective pitcher for SHS, pitching three complete innings with a strikeout and no runs or walks surrendered.
Now 4-4 on the season, Senatobia will host Southaven on Friday, March 1 at 7 P.M., before playing four games next week on the road at Southaven (March 4), at Cleveland Central (March 5) and at home for the Tate County Classic on Saturday, March 9 against Strayhorn (11 A.M.) and Independence (5 P.M.).
