With roughly one month left in the regular season, Independence successfully picked up a pair of tune-up victories before stepping back into region play, ringing in the new year with wins against Coldwater and Strayhorn last week.
In Tuesday’s action against Coldwater, the Lady Kats built a big lead against the Lady Cougars in the first half en route to a 48-19 triumph. Jermeria Martin and Kanyiah Walker paced the Lady Kats’ victory with 12 points apiece.
Independence followed up the girls’ victory with a solid win in boys’ basketball, defeating a much-improved Coldwater squad, 72-51. Jayden Watkins and Tyler Webb led the way in scoring for the Wildcats, totaling 19 and 16 points, respectively.
In Friday’s home twinbill, the Lady Kats battled toe-to-toe with Strayhorn, earning a hard-fought 49-32 win against the Lady Mustangs. Walker once again led Independence with 16 points, while Nakyiah Walker added 10 of her own.
The boys’ contest wasn’t as close, as Independence rolled to strong first half lead and a 71-36 victory over the Mustangs. Watkins and Webb once again led the Wildcats in scoring, while every participating player scored for IHS.
With the sweep, Independence improved to 9-10 overall in girls’ competition, while the IHS boys moved to 3-10 on the season. The Wildcats travelled to Senatobia Tuesday for another non-region battle, and will take a short trip to Rosa Fort Friday evening.
